Giants disappoint despite 23-17 win over Redskins

When your quarterback (Eli Manning) is the highest paid player in NFL history (having just signed a contract extension giving him $106.9 million over the next seven years), you expect a high(er) level of play. To put it bluntly: Despite the Giants' winning score of 23-17, Eli Manning simply did not deliver in today's too close game against the Washington Redskins. And the rest of the New York Giants didn't inspire a whole lot confidence either, except for kicker Lawrence Tynes, who scored three field goals for the G-Men.

It was like Freaky Friday -- or Sneaky Sunday -- here in the Tri-State area, with Mark Sanchez and the Jets looking and playing way more confidently against the Houston Texans today than the Super Bowl XLII-winning New York Giants.

Yeah, I'm glad the Giants won. (A W is ALWAYS better than an L.) But Big Blue better figure out a way to come up bigger if they want to make it to the playoffs this year.

(No pictures. Was eating dinner. The spouse made a heavenly cauliflower soup, I made some crispy bacon, and J-THREE-O made garlic bread. Yum.)

A win is a win is a win is a win!

But maybe you need to wear the Giant thong during the game? Might be the bust they need-to know you are 'behind' them?

I don't know. The Redskins have been working on defense. I did not see the game however. I have never been enamored by the argument "they should have won by more."

@jjv:My argument is not "they should have won by more," though you can never have enough points. My argument -- or opinion, which is shared by the spouse -- is that the Giants didn't look great out there. Too many dropped balls and missed plays. And Eli just didn't look confident. How they played today will not get them to the playoffs, unless all their opponents are worse, which, I guess, is possible. Just not probably.

@Anonymous: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Clearly, it was my intimate apparel (or lack thereof) that distracted them. ; P

Yay - I hate the Redskins (even after 20 yrs in DC, never been tempted to join the bandwagon)!!!

I'm with EMM on the bandwagon sidelines. The Redskins are simply not that good so I can see how J might be worried about the Giants' performance, especially seeing how well Philadephia and Dallas (we hates them) did.

Should be a good, or at least interesting game tonight, my upstate NY friends, EMM and Dave S. I am assuming you will both be rooting for the Bills, yes? : )

I am a (very happy) dieheard Jets fan, and here is my take on the Giants (and I HATE Eli Manning). I think the Giants played extremely well. They gave up a fluke special teams play (it happens) and a TD in what was basically garbage/prevent defense time.

Eli is NOT a great quarterback, but he does manage a game pretty well. So he doesn't have to be Drew Brees for the Giants to be ok.

@TommyMac71: Good points. Guess I was only paying attention when the Giants missed a play/dropped the ball. I just wanted/hoped they would do better, especially with the amount they're paying to Eli. The Skins are not a great team, and the G-Men just didn't look as confident as the Jets, who got me way more excited. Note: Please to be seeing/commenting on my Jets post. : )

Bills-Pats will be neither good nor interesting, but will at least improve assessments of the last three Bills Super Bowl performances by comparison. It's on Monday night only because God in the form of His other only son Tom Brady is back, otherwise it would be a 1PM Sunday start preempted, mercifully, by fishing shows in most major markets.
