Huh?! Wha?! Ellen DeGeneres, the comedienne, semi-spontaneous dancer, and Emmy award-winning talk show host is American Idol/FremantleMedia's answer to Paula Abdul, Emmy award-winning choreographer and Grammy award-winning singer?! Ellen DeGeneres can't even sing!
I am SHOCKED, people, SHOCKED.
Ellen DeGeneres as a new judge on America's Got Talent, OK. But DeGeneres as the fourth judge on American Idol? If they wanted to add a little comedy to the show, they should have recruited Norman Gentle (aka Nick Mitchell). At least Norman/Nick can sing.
For more on this breaking story, read this and this. (Just click on the hyperlinks, Mom.)
Seriously, what is going on over there? Didn't Kara "Studio 57" DioGuardi show Idol producers the error of their ways last season? "No Boundaries"?! WORST. IDOL. FINALE. SONG. EVER. And that's saying something. And will we now have DeGeneres kissing DioGuardi, a la Simon and Paula? (You're welcome, Simon.)
SIGH. At least I have Drop Dead Diva and Glee to console me....

Oh God, it starts again, the Idol chatter.
It's official. They have jumped the shark.
I don't get it either. It might a good personality fit, but she isn't a music proffessional.
Not happy-though I LOVE Ellen.
I like Ellen, too, though like Thomas (aka TommyMac), I think Idol "jumped the shark."
The only reason people watch idol is to see them get cut down NY judges. That's why they have lousy talent on the beginning shows. It is like watching a car accident. It brings out the worst of human nature. And for the record Paula Abdul was never a good singer either. Dancer yes, singer no.
I personally HATE the audition rounds, precisely for that reason.
As for Paula Abdul, you are out of your mind. The woman had six Number One singles. And "Cold Hearted"? Pop GENIUS.
Clearly, you, sir, are a pop Philistine. ; )
Having now worked my way past my initial shock, and yes, it could be a shark jumping thing going on, I'm good with it. The whole thing is just entertainment anyway and it's not like most of Paula's comments were lucid or helpful most of the time. Ellen's bound to be a lot funnier (although Paula was frequently unintentionally funny. I'll miss her drooling over the sexay young men.) ;-)
I guess that means no one to do the high school-like flirting with Simon. Hmmm... maybe this isn't such a bad idea after all.
I, as a musician, don’t feel she, Ellen, is a good replacement for Paula.
I like Ellen, but her being added to the panel won'd drive me to watch Idol.
Agree that this is the "shark". If I were betting, I'd say they'll give it 2 more seasons and then bye-bye.
I for one think this is a good move. Ellen will represent the "average Jane" POV, eg "I may not know music but I know what I like." Plus she could drive Simon nuts with pleasantly snide comments.
And has TommyMac gone upscale? Is his blog now known as "Master Thomas' Internet Location of Whimsy"?
